green = new or ecologist?

In the following passage: "Some are arguing that Barack Obama is too green for the job. But does experience guarantee success?" (Breaking News, Analysis, Opinions, Multimedia and Blogs - TIME)

I thought that green was only referring to ecologist. Does it also mean new?

It means inexperienced and that meaning is far older than the ecology related meaning.

When fruit is "green" we know that it is not ripe, not at its best. More time is needed to reach its best taste and presentation.

I think this is what the speaker meant: Obama is not ready yet to assume the huge task of being the president of the USA.
