Dear Teachers,

If I liked to report the sentence below, would 'had had to' or 'had to' be the correct answer?

'We had to get up very early yesterday'.

He said they had had to get up very early the previous day.

Thanks.

Henry

'We had to get up very early yesterday'. :tick:

He said they had had to get up very early the previous day. :tick:
You could also express the second one as:
.
He said they had to get up very early the previous day.
.

It depends on what you are trying to say.
