The sentence is rather unnatural. "Hanging around" a town suggests just being there with absolutely no purpose, like teenagers do in some city centres. Given that the film Castaway was set on a desert island, I can't see any way that one could re-enact the film in a town.

May I ask if your member profile information is correct? I believe it was being used as a metaphor. The town is so remote with so few people to talk to that a person may well feel they are on a deserted island.
