Which is correct:

1) He has been writing poetry for twenty years now. He has written a number of poems that were incomprehensible. He had to rewrite them.

2) He has been writing poetry for twenty years now. He wrote a number of poems that were incomprehensible. He had to rewrite them.

Gratefully,
Navi.

I'd use #1, as the tenses match and he has probably not finished writing incomprehensible poetry.

If he's dead or will definitely write no more poetry, start #2 with 'He wrote poetry for 20 years'.
