Jane, your father called when you were out. He sounded as if he was worried about something.


If I omit "was" in the bolded phrase, do I make a change in meaning? Thanks.

You do indeed change the meaning.

"as if he was worried about something" = something is worrying him now.

"as if he worried about about something" = he is always worrying about something.
