headings of a table - date or dates / session or sessions

I am curious whether the plural or singular form should be used for headings of a table. I've certainly seen both.

E.g.

Date / Dates Topic / Topics

1/1/2015 Globalization
2/1/2015 Deforestation
...... .................

It could be either one.

I think that the singular is far more common.
It is similar to writing fields in a database. For example, you might have fields "Item, Price, Number Sold, Number In Stock, etc". They're not plurals.

The singular also takes up less space, allowing narrower columns which might be important in getting the information printed as you want.
