Hi, teachers.
I am not sure what the third line of the following poem means:
"`For I shall happiest be to-night,
Or saddest in the town;
Heaven send I read their message right,
Those eyes of hazel brown.'"
I understand that this is a poem of love and that the third and forth lines say "I read aright the message that the eyes of my loved one have been sending", but what does "heaven send" mean? Is this phrase a kind of interjection like "my God!" or "heaven!"?

I would take it to mean "I hope (I read their........).
Heaven send is a poetic way of hoping that God will ensure the message from the eyes is the one you want-the one that would make you happiest rather than saddest.

The message reader believes 'heaven' is the ultimate source for the truth. Heaven will provide the honest answer to the reader's question.

Depending upon your level of spirituality, 'God' could certainly be used in place of 'heaven'. (God, send confirmation that I read their message right {correctly}.
