i have two sentences:

-to pass the time , he began to write novels
-passing the time, he began to write novels

which sentence is correct?
can you explain how to use this grammar!

The differences can be shown in this way:

The reason he writes novels: "To pass the time, he began to write novels".

His chief means of occupying himself: "Passing the time, he wrote novels."
