What is the correct answer and why?
After driving all day, we welcomed the sight of the motel .
or
After driving all day, the motel was a welcome sight.

The first sentence is correct. The second is not. It's not the motel that drove all day, so it should read:
After our driving all day the motel was a welcome sight to us.
It doesn't sound very nice though.

I would omit the commas in both sentences, but I hope someone will confirm that.

Either one is fine. In the second sentence the subject is understood to be someone - not the motel.
I agree, they are both correct, but I would use "After having driven..." rather than "After driving..."
