In the sentence:
We heard the dogs barking. What part of speech is the word barking?

In the sentence:
We wrote letters to Santa asking for new pets. What part of speech is the word asking.

This is driving me crazy, please help!

"Barking" is a PARTICIPLE that describes the dogs. Most books call this an objective complement. (2) Your second sentence is a combination of: We wrote letters to Santa + The letters asked for new pets. Thus, "asking for new pets" is a PARTICIPIAL PHRASE that "modifies" (belongs to) "letters."
