How does the teacher see the respective roles of prescriptive and descriptive grammar in their work with literacy students?

That's a very good question. I think it will depend very much on the teacher. We debate these concepts all the time on this and other language forums. In my opinion, there is tension between the two because descriptivists have expanded their role from observing and cataloguing alternate usage patterns to prescribing those patterns as correct.

I agree- descriptivism has turned prescriptive; the theory behind it is sound, to me, but many are using it as a way of trying to dictate all usage. I would say that describing the language we actually us is the best policy, so traditional rules should be updated to account for changes in the language. ;-)

I agree with your position. Prescriptivist rules, in some cases, hang on past the point of usefulness. In many other cases, descriptivists who are prescribing want everything to change instantaneously. The language will change, and is changing, albeit slowly.

Fortunately, language changes at its own pace and pays little heed to the calls of prescriptivists for it to slow down and the calls of descriptivists for it to hurry up.
