It's Cherry from Hong Kong

 Hi! everybody

It's Cherry from Hong Kong. I'm a Chinese too. Wanna to get more chances to practise English and know more about different culture.

I've got a Belgian penfriend. The experience of making friend with foreign people is quite good. She is a nice person and tells me a lot about herself and her country.

Hope we can gain a good experience here.

Hi, Cherry, and welcome to UsingEnglish. It's nice to see someone spelling 'practise' correctly- you should be pleased to know that the majority of the English get that wrong. ;-)

Re: It's Cherry from Hong Kong

Lucy, can I ask you a question?

I was reading an article about nationality words and it was suggested that 'Chinaman' was no longer regarded as acceptable. Is this the case? Some nationality words have special terms for the individual, like Spaniard, others use -man\woman, like Frenchamn, other use the nationality itself, like Italian. Should I say I spoke to a Chinese yesterday? or Chinese man\woman. Is Chinaman regarded as unacceptable? Thanks ;-)

Do people still say "Chinaman"?

I always say "Chinese person" :)

You could always say "I was talking to a lao wai"

Lao wai is the Chinese word for foreigner

I'm not sure how many Brits would know what a 'lao wai' is. I didn't. ;-)
