The fact that, let's say, a tree collapses on somebody, it can be explained by Karma. Nothing is accidental. We all have to learn from everything. And here I would like to quot Abraham Lincoln: "If I do good, I feel good. If I do bad, I feel bad. that's my religion." In other words If you make good you receive good and vice versa. So If a tree collapsed on you cartainly you did something wrong in the past. Thus, everything has a purpose. And I repet myself: NOTHING IS ACCIDENTAL

You are on your own in your belief. If the sea crashes into the base of the cliff and the cliff collapses into the sea then you would say the cliff is at fault, it is not an accident. There are so many cases where an accident without cause can and does arise that you cannot say nothing is accidental. Even you are alive because of an accident of conception and birth.

Sorry, but Ahab does have a wife and son back in Nantucket, and they are mentioned several times in the book. Reread chapter 127; when the Pequod meets the Rachel, the Rachel's captain begs Ahab to help him look for his son's lost whaleboat. The captain appeals to Ahab by reminding him that he (Ahab) has a child "of his old age" back in Nantucket.

Also, in the past twenty years or so there have been many scholarly papers published concerning homosexual themes and imagery in this book. Just Google Moby Dick homosexuality.

Even you are alive because of an accident of conception and birth.

I still claim my humble opinion that nothing is accidental. For instance, suppossing that there is God, how do you explain that there are many people who are born with handicaps ( one of their leg, or arm, or anything else is missing )? If there is God, don't you think that He should give us the same chance in life? My explanation to this fact is that we bring sins from past/other life; if you, say, you murdered in your past life, you will be punished in this life; in other words I do believe in reincarnation. We are born and reborn until we learn our roles in this world. Even the fact that you were born male or female is not accidental. If you had been born female it means that you have to learn something as a woman and vice versa. ( I do not believe in Darwin's evolutionist theory.). Or everything in life is resonance: if you do good, you receive good and vice versa.

That's your belief, but you cannot use it to explain the writings of Herman Melville, who did not hold this belief. It is his own context and beliefs that need to be considered when discussing the content of his books.

""I do not believe that there is a god, nor that any religion has the absolute right to insist that 'their god' is the only one"". If there is God, don't you think that He should give us the same chance in life? My explanation to this fact is that we bring sins from past/other life;
""So you actually believe that we are all reincarnated? Just suppose that that had been possible, say, 3 millennia ago then as the population increased where did all the 'extras' come from?""if you, say, you murdered in your past life, you will be punished in this life; in other words I do believe in reincarnation. We are born and reborn until we learn our roles in this world. Even the fact that you were born male or female is not accidental. If you had been born female it means that you have to learn something as a woman and vice versa. ( I do not believe in Darwin's evolutionist theory.). It so happens that many people who do good also receive some good in return, but there are just as many who do good but always get the worst part of life to deal with. In many cases it is more to do with an attitude of mind than reality. And then what about all those who do bad things but never get punished? Do you suppose that they keep coming back and getting even worse? If so, where is Hitler today?
The real point here is that you cannot put your beliefs into anyone else's mind; not now, nor in the past.

What goes around comes around

Then, enlighten me how do you explain that some people always have luck without having to strive in their everyday life? Believe me, a good or bad deed leads a person's destiny in the appropriate direction. And this can be proved in everyday life: just try to think positively and try to do only positive things for a few weeks and you will be amazed by the results. Certainly we are born with hereditary characteristics. At the same time we possess certain innate abilities that science cannot adequately account for. To our parents we are indebted for the gross sperm and ovum that form the nucleus of this so-called being.
Karma is simply the process of cause and effect. If you do A, B will happen. If you plant wheat seeds, and water and look after them, wheats will grow.
To some degree luck is an illusion, or simply a matter of how you look at life. Forr instance, somebody almost won $10,000 on the lottery, but just missed the jackpot by one number. Some would consider themselves lucky to get $10,000, while others would be cursing their misfortune not to win a million. If you find yourself cursing your luck, take time to count your blessings. You will find they are many. This is the great wheel of life, the balancing of the rights and wrongs of life throughout the many lifetimes of an individual.

Then, enlighten me how do you explain that some people always have luck without having to strive in their everyday life? No explanation necessary; that's life!Believe me, a good or bad deed leads a person's destiny in the appropriate direction. Why? How? You cannot say that that is ALWAYS the result. And this can be proved in everyday life Proved? There is no definitive proof either way. : just try to think positively and try to do only positive things for a few weeks I agree with positive thinking but from personal experience and talking to others the result is never guaranteed. and you will be amazed by the results. Certainly we are born with hereditary characteristics. At the same time we possess certain innate abilities that science cannot adequately account for. To our parents we are indebted for the gross sperm and ovum that form the nucleus of this so-called being.
Karma is simply the process of cause and effect That is physics. . If you do A, B will happen Not guaranteed. If you plant wheat seeds, and water and look after them, wheats will grow Not if the seed is faulty.
To some degree luck is an illusion Yes, it is , or simply a matter of how you look at life. Forr instance, somebody almost won $10,000 on the lottery, but just missed the jackpot by one number. Some would consider themselves lucky to get $10,000, while others would be cursing their misfortune not to win a million And this is just one example of the differences between people. If you find yourself cursing your luck, take time to count your blessings Agreed. You will find they are many. This is the great wheel of life, the balancing of the rights and wrongs of life throughout the many lifetimes of an individual.

There is no balance. You have only to look at the world to see that there is a lack of balance everywhere; otherwise we would all be in nirvana!

The book In the Heart of the Deep by Nathaniel Philbrick, a nonfiction book about the whaling ship Moby-Dick is based on, talks a lot about the role of women in whaling communities. Actually, since these voyages could last 3 or 4 years, it was not uncommon for the captain's wife and children to come along.

One good resource for students of English reading Moby-Dick is Power Moby-Dick, a free online annotation of the book.
