When we need someone to give me a ride. Normally we would say ' Can you give me a ride ? "

How about ' Do you mind giving me a hitchhike ' ?

hitchhike means to catch a ride with someone to the closest point near your destination and then to hike the rest of the way.

hitch = to go along with
hike = to walk long distances

You can hitch a ride with someone (i.e catch a ride with them in their vehicle) but you can't hitchhike a ride, because 'hike' means to walk.

:D

Then I put it down that ' can you give me a hitchhike ' is not a way to ask for riding with them home. :)

Not necessarily- you would ask a friend or acquaintance for a lift, but you wouldn't hitch a ride with them, unless you were using the term jokingly. ;-)

Can you give me a lift? is the same as Can you give me a ride?, but to hitch a ride is to accept a ride from a stranger.
