What do you understand "held out the prospect of further statements" to mean? That the plaintiff will make further statements?

No, that the plaintiff might ('the prospect') make further statements. Oh, and I now understand what you mean by 'replication'. Replace it with 'reply' or 'response' - 'replication' is a very dated word in legal English (I say this as a legal proofreader). Anyway, good night!
