One other thing: as a boy I learnt to say 'keep still'. I don't know ...[goes to BNC] ... Ahem... 'keep still' seems to be about 3 times as common in Br Eng; but 'hold still' still seems to be quite common. Perhaps it's a question of dialect. :?: (I think my father (from Lancashire) tended to say 'hold still' but his father-in-law (a Scot, school teacher, and prescriptivist) disapproved ;-))
