what does "holds him higher" mean?

what does "holds him higher" mean?

The sentence doesn't make a lot of sense. My best guess is that it should read something like "he holds him in higher regard". This would mean that he has a better opinion of him than he had before.

There is a tense problem in the sentence though. It should either be:

When he knew what his son had done, he held him.......

OR

Now that he knows what his son has done, he holds him....
