Hi Mohsin-

The very fact you were able to type your message in English in the first place suggests you already have a somewhat decent grasp of it

But if we're talking from scratch- well, that really depends on several variables:

a) how much time you are willing to put in

b) how quickly you can grasp new languages

c) how often you are exposed to other mediums (television/magazines/PEOPLE!) who use English regularly

If you score high on the above, then you should be able to have a reasonable understanding of the English language within a year

Though again- this is such a broad question it is impossible to put a definitive answer on it

However- if any members know of any legitimate studies that outline this scenario, then they would be welcome here

Mohsin,

I agree with the points listed by studentproofreader.
It also depends on what aspect(s) of English you wish to
learn. I mean, you will learn spoken English pretty
quickly since you are already living in an English-speaking environment.
But learning English to pass some test (ESL/TOEFL) will
require work and time.

Studentproofreader, I happened to see some (seemingly unintentional) humor
in this. 'other mediums' - may mean Mohsin is also a 'medium' (one through whom spirits communicate), which he well might be. ;-)
As far as I understand, 'mediums' is used only for people
communicating with spirits, and 'media' is used for TV,
newspapers, magazines, as also for CD, tape, etc.
No offense meant. :)

While on the subject of mediums, here is a short joke on psychics:
One psychic to another: "You are OK. How am I?" :-D

Though I was using 'medium' to signal a form of suitable communication here, be it through the mass media or the close community

OK, I got it now.
Thanks
