How to make friends with western people if without good oral English?

I'm striving to study in Australia now. Everything for me is pretty strange and people here are high-qualified and nice, but I just don't know how to get familiar with local students. Is it a good way to take part in some clubs?

Do what you did back home. Approach people you'd like to get to know and talk to them about things that interest you both. Speaking English perfectly is not important; challenge yourself. :D

But please do not follow the advice of Leon (Crazy English) who tells you to go up to foreigners and YELL "Hello."

This is really offensive.
