Microsoft Word has automatic footnotes. If you search for the keyword "footnotes" in the MS Word Help program, it will give you instructions.

The Word shortcut is Ctrl+Alt+f and they will be done automatically, including numbering.

I'm curious, as a teacher, do you assign papers with footnotes required? I'm 22, so not too far out of high school, and we were never assigned footnotes. We were always assigned parenthetical documentation instead. It was the same while I was in college; parenthetical documentation in place of footnotes. I assumed that this was the trend throughout schools.

It depends- I teach post-graduate students sometimes and they have to use footnotes. At lower levels, I rarely see them used. ;-)
