I certainly have trouble to remember things. Were I to encounter too much of the vocabulary, chances are that I'll forget them shortly after, about one or two days, or maximum, one week. I cannot even use them in conversation since all the complex vocabulary vanish when I have recouse to them, instead are the simple ones. Sometimes I cannot make out what's one the radio, or on TV, I don't know what comes over me. So, native speakers, if you have any tips on this, please help me.
And as people often say, read as much as you can, I tried. However, I have to check a lot in the dictionary, they're too much for me to remember. Any tips?

Belly,

For both vocabulary words and idioms I recommend that you try to use the word or phrase at least 10 times in different contexts within a day or two of discovery and then periodically after that as you deem appropriate. This method does not work for everyone but there is something about using these new words and phrases that help them to stick in our minds.

Good luck,
Carl

Hi there,
Thanks for giving advice. I did keep on refering to dictionary, yet I always forget the meaning of them. I've been checking a word for 5 or six times but cannot remember the meaning of it.
I read newspaper in English, some such as Latest Global Breaking News & Views | Times Online News. Click one article and heap of words pop out, I used to check dictionary constantly everytime I encounter new words, but today I guess their meaning and move on until I cannot guess anymore. After that, I look 'em up in dictionary, and keep forgeting them for no reason.
Films with subtitle do help, but a lot of words I don't know I have to take them down. Notwithstanding, the film moves too fast I cannot take the words down with the context. I tried to pause them constantly yet it soon makes me feel bored about watching film in English. Another method I tried was just take the words down but when I look for them in the dictionary I soon forget the context....
Hm.... Harsh!

What about a Post-it®. (Just kidding)

Well, when I studied (tried to...) French our teacher told us: "If you want to remember a word, remember a phrase"

So, if you whant to remember something like "to give someone a piece of mind"
try to remember a song/film/book that you like.
E.g. I remember what that phrase means because I've heard it into Run Rabbit Run (by Eminem).

you need peace of mind, well here's a piece of mine,

I've heard it, I've googled it and now I won't forget.

It think listening to songs can be helpful.

Bye,
Simosito (aka SnowFlame)

Hi betty,

Have you tried articles of the same theme; say reading writings about politics or home, celebrities or religion, etc. Focus on one theme that interests you. The vocabularies there are used again and again, and in different situations, giving you a broad understanding and usage of a given word. Of course, checking in with the dictionary is also a great help to understand it completely.... And putting those words in action is vital.

Repetition is very important in remembering things.

hi

here is some way to try:

1-watch film. start with you favorit films and watch it several times don't check the new word during the film.
2-if you feel the new word that you want to learn is hard for you or you think that you are not ready to use it in a sentence so let the word go, don't worry about that, be sure that one day it'll come back and that day you are ready.
3-read and listen so much and don't worry about the new word. just read and listen.
4- try lietner learn box. it's good for just some case. learn hard words with this. google

How about buying an audio book that teaches vocabulary, and listen to it over and over again. (This is what I plan to do when I get some buck.);-)

I realy feel it troublesome to look into dictionary everytime.
Its quite boring and loose interest in the topic.

The best is to pick one or two words. Search them on internet. Understand their context.

Take part in written discussions on net and try to use these words.
Take your time while making the sentence, once you got familiar with the context You will naturally use it while speaking.
