I fell on / to a bit of broken glass

Hello all members!

Today I heard the following sentence spoken in Polish on TV.

I fell on / to pieces of broken glass (literal translation from Polish).

Maybe it should be "I fell over and cut myself on a bit of broken glass".

What is your opinion?

"Onto" and "bit" are fine, but in American English we're more likely to say "on" and "piece."

I don't know how Britons would say it.

"Bit" is OK in BrE but I'd say either "piece" or "shard".

In BrE, you could use either on or onto.
