Which word is correct? Can we use the word "supervisor" for a person who is in charge of a R&D department of an IT company?

My first work experience was wonderful as I had and still have a great manager/supervisor. He has a significant influence on improving and developing my Linux skills.

Yes, you can. Your sentences are okay.

The indefinite article is an when it precedes a word with an initial vowel sound. The letter R, which is pronounced the same as are​, is such a word.
