i am trying to write a potted critical comment for the scythe, i have to mention mankinds obsession with the darker side of life and pessimism

'Potted' means 'brief' in BE, but I'm not sure I grasp the question fully. ;-)

If it's supposed to be brief then you have to avoid redundancy, and "obsession with the darker side of life and pessimism" seems to me to be already redundant.
