I need information about a what a sentence means

Hello. Im a new user and im not sure i am using this properly, but i'll try this anyways. :)
I am writing a report about the epidemic of Polio. I have read a few articles and there are some sentences i do not understand. Please help me understand. I will write you a paragraph and the sentence i do not understand.

The words underlined and highlighted blue--The work bore fruit??

Produced good results. It's a metaphor from trees that bear (=produce) fruit.
