Hello.
I would like to say that started walking faster in order to be abreast of my acquaintance ahead of me.
I quickened my pace in order to be catch up with my acquaintance who was walking a few metres ahead of me.
or
I quickened the pace in order to be catch up with my acquaintance who was walking a few metres ahead of me.
