Are the authors of idioms unknown - when quoting an idiom, is crediting the origin necessary? ie: There are none so blind as those who will not see.

Are the authors of idioms unknown - when quoting an idiom, is crediting the origin necessary? ie: There are none so blind as those who will not see.

Most traditional idioms/proverbs/sayings are unattributable. There are a number that come from such writers as Shakespeare. However, in day to day usage it is not required that these are credited.

If the use is within an academic paper, it would be advised to credit the source.
