We imagine something and say "If I had a car, that would be great". If we have to tell this to someone so how would we say that? "On that day "I was standing at a bus stop and wondering that if I had a car that would be great" or "I was standing at a bus stop and wondering that if I had had a car that would have been great"? Does the tense change?

Don't use "wondering". Use "thinking".

On Tuesday, I was standing at a bus stop thinking that it would be great if I had a car.
Just before that terrible bus journey, I had been standing at a bus stop thinking that it would be/would have been great if I had a car.

Note that we probably wouldn't actually use either of them. I'd say "I was thinking how great it would be to have a car".
