if or unless

This website's Language Quizzes. If or Unless:

9. ______ she pays up, we're going to be in real trouble. I chose unless, but that isn't the correct answer.

I would have chosen 'unless' too. She may owe some money to a loan shark, for instance.
I suppose you can take another point of view and imagine the family won't have a buck left for living if she pays up.

Grammatically, it can be either. Logically, "unless" seems more likely.
