If you could meet any important historical figure, who would it be and why?

John F. Kennedy When I was a teenager, John Kennedy inspired me, as well as millions of other Americans, to become active in public service. As a direct result of his influence I became a teacher. "Ask not what your country can do for you...Ask what you can do for your country!"

Of course my favourite belly dancer, Maria Shashkova. But she is not an arab woman. She is a russian belly dancer. Her beauty, her dancing, her style and every things about her. I really love her so much. Oh if I can meet her or just take some of her lessons.

Interesting choice, Devil's tear! Receiving lessons from the professional dancer would be terrific!

I would like to meet Florence Nightingale, who was born in a rich family but dedicated herself to the care for the poor. I have read about how she nursed and treated many of the wounded soldiers, about how Florence Nightingale used to clean the hospitals and how she became successful in brining down the death rates of the soldiers.

What struck me most was how she used to go around silently at night carrying a lamp and checking on each patient, even after everyone had gone to sleep. I like the name she got, "The lady with the lamp."

Another person I would like to meet is Mother Teresa for her contribution for the welfare of the poor.

You know, the poverty has always been my philosophy and thinking. I'd say, I love princess Diana as well. I just want to see her grave and put a lot flowers on it.

I would like to meet Winston Churchill! He was such a feisty little fellow! His courage and devotion to the people of Britain during World War II was truly amazing!

Cyrus the great, for respecting human rights and their freedom rights so much that he was called The Father by the people of his great empire,In a time that liberty was the least important for any other king,500 B.C.
I adore him.

For me it has to be Pierre de Fermat - I would love to find out what his proof for his last theorem was!

Horsa, I am not familiar with Pierre de Fermat. What is his claim to fame?

I was impressed to see you know about Persian kings,Anyway I believe the Achaemenid dynasty was one of a kind, specially Cyrus who established the greates systems in most ways,Darius the great who expanded the empire and followed the footsteps of Cyrus and then Xerxes, the next great king. After them the empire began to weaken in many ways until it was finally defeated by Alexander after 200 years of governing.

I suggest everyone to read this page:

atlaisha, thank you for the reference page to Cyrus!

You mentioned Alexander the Great in your previous post. When I was a young boy I was always fascinated by the stories I heard about Alexander! He accomplished so much at such an early age. I bet he would have been a great playmate in my neighborhood!!! :)

Cheers,
Amigo

That is one of the most inspiring things to hear. It should be repeated in classrooms all over the world.

Winston Churchill is one of those figures in history that always calls into question his greatness to many people. One thing that has always impressed me about Churchill is his use of the English language and his "turn of phrase".

Google for his quotations and find out!

And don't forget the "unsung" hero Mary Seacole!

Batfink, how about your countryman Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty? An Irish Priest in the Vatican who during WW2 developed a rescue service whereby he made it possible for over 6,000 members of the Allied Expeditionary Force to be safely transported to Switzerland so that they could be returned to their military units. (These 6,000 Allied Military Personnel represented those who were shot down over Italy and or became prisoners of war who escaped. Many of these allied soldiers and sailors were members of the Jewish Faith. One of his other activities was having many churches in Rome protect many Jewish people by having Baptismal Certificates made out in their names.

Now, sharing dinner with the good Monsignor would have been an interesting evening!

Batfink, thank you for your comments!

I am curious and perhaps you can help me! In my travels through this forum I have not met many native Irishmen! Have you encountered many of your countrymen in the forum?

I am impressed Amigo! Yes, he would be a fine man to share a dish and a glass of wine!

I would like to have met Dorothy Parker (I switch to the good old USA!). I have a deep respect to anyone who can turn a phrase (I would be in awe and a little frightened I expect!).

I don't know how I can help you, but if I can... :)

No, I do not encounter many Irish people on this forum (or on many teaching forums). I am a newbie here and joined as I was impressed with some of the material on China that is provided here.

I was born in Dublin and spent a lot of the time in the north. Therefore the use and love of the English language is very much ingrained in my soul.

And you?
