"I'm obliged"

In "Danger Man", a 1960s television drama, the hero John Drake oftentimes says "I'm obliged" where today we might say "thank you". I really like this usage but I am unsure of when to use it. Would anyone care to advise me?

nowadays it is considered extremely formal usage
I seem to remember my mother using it on rare occasions :-D
