Do you know what "to immerse oneself in something" means (figuratively)?

Do you know what "to immerse oneself in something" means (figuratively)?
I have made a simple search.

1) In Wordweb it means: Devote oneself fully to

2) But here seems a little different: to dive or rush into something; to immerse oneself in something

So, I don't know exactly what it is but I know there is two options. 1) Is it like devoting yourself your family, studies, dog etc which is a concious activity.
2) It is like you watch tv and forget everthing time, your homework etc.

Thank you.

Used figuratively it means that you have consciously devoted yourself to one activity to the exclusion of all others.

Would you explain the part "latest twists"?

Thank you.

Re: immerse himself in the lastest twistes of the affair.

A complicated series of events is often called "twists and turns", evoking a winding country road that isn't a direct route to anywhere. Another expression with "twist" is "twist of fate", often shortened to just "twist". It means an unexpected change in the direction of events.

The latest twists of the affair are the most recent unexpected changes in a longer event.
