If Mike's family has permanently moved to Australia,
with the intention of becoming residents or citizens, they have emigrated/immigrated to Australia.

Which is the correct verb?

Thanks.

They immigrated to Australia. They emigrated from their previous home country.

You can remember this by noting that the prefix im- is similar to the preposition "in" and that you immigrate into your new home.
