hi,

"my job didn't seem to make sense in face of what was going on on the streets..."

is this sentence OK?

does it sound native English?

Not really.

...in view of what is/was happening..
...in relation to what is/was happening...
...in the context of what is/was happening....

Best to avoid "on on".
