I am wondering if my sentence sounds natural.

In his hurry to catch the plane, John had forgotten his passport at home.

In BrE, that doesn't work. We don't forget something + somewhere. We just forget something. As soon as we add the location, we use the verb "leave".

John had forgotten his passport.
John had [accidentally] left his passport at home.

By the way, you have a typo in the first word of your sentence.

I'm with ems, Bassim, but when our American friends wake up in 5+ hours, they'll tell you that your sentence is just fine in AmE.

This speaker of American English finds he left his passport at home preferable, but forgot is acceptable.
