in or on a street?

Hi,

The following questions came up in a classroom discussion on prepositions.

1. Do you live in canal street?
2. Do you live on canal street?

Should it be in or on in the questions above?

I know the ' on canal street ' is correct, but I found it difficult to explain why ' do you live in canal street' is not quite right.

Can someone help please.

As far as I am concerned both are in common use and are ok. In fact, in the part of England I am from "in" is usual. :)
