I have tried to use "in the flesh" in my sentence. Would you please correct my mistakes?

Linda talked to Tom only via email, and when she met him in the flesh, she couldn't hide her disappointment. He smoked a pipe, was obese and wore a bushy beard.

I'd probably use "Linda had talked to Tom ..." because it refers to the time before she met him in the flesh.
