Are there any indicators supporting our intuition of the stress pattern in words like the above? Maybe the origins of those words or their letter or sound patterns or morphology?

I'll leave it to the specialists to provide an answer, but be aware that the word "permit" is stressed differently when it means "to allow" (verb) vs when used in "work permit" (noun).
