[Grammar] Intro sentence grammar help

The following is the first sentence of my introductory paragraph and I was just wondering if it made sense grammatically.


Humans, top of the food chain, we are the most successful species to ever walk the face of the earth.

Strictly grammatical:

Humans, at the top of the food chain, are the most successful species to ever walk the face of the Earth.

However, you may want to make sure the sentence makes sense based on its content.

Are humans at the top of every food chain? Also, there are many species that could make claims to be the most successful species on different grounds. Ants outnumber humans by thousands to one, for instance. Other species have been around thousands of times longer than humans, who are relative newcomers. The dinosaurs, though extinct, ruled the earth for far longer than we have. It would be more logical to base the claim for human success on something other than the food chain, and if you did run into a very hungry tiger, you might find yourself questioning that claim. :up:
