Is "enduring" needed or just "entailed"?

In ancient times a pilgrimage entailed enduring many hardships and took many days of travel. In those days rebels, bandits and pirates roamed freely, and one undertook such a journey at the risk of one’s life.

Is "enduring" needed or just "entailed"?
