Is my sentence correct

The Situation: In a train two people started talking about politics and suddenly their conversation turned into a quarrel. The noise was high and in a minute the other people around got involved in it and they got divided and the quarrel went on and on...

In order to describe the situation I used this sentence. Tell me the use of the idiom "hammer and tongs" is correct or not.

My sentence: I'm dumbfound to find that how two people went at it hammer and tongs about politics and the people around got involved at the drop of the hat.

I'm not sure whether you're writing this sentence while you are still on the train witnessing the argument. If you are:

"I am dumbfounded to find two people going at it hammer and tongs about politics....."

If not:

"I was dumbfounded to see that two people went at it hammer and tongs about politics......"

So - two points - you are "dumbfounded", not "dumbfound", and yes, your use of hammer and tongs is correct, in my opinion.

Regarding the second half of your sentence, you don't generally use "at the drop of a hat" when referring to the past. It's usually used to express how you "would" do something. I would give up my job at the drop of a hat. I would go on a date with Brad Pitt at the drop of a hat".
