The Detroit Tigers is the best team.

or

The Detroit Tigers are the best team.

In BrE, we tend towards the plural with sports teams.

Manchester United are top of the league again.
Liverpool have signed another million pound player.
Brighton and Hove Albion are going down again this year.

In the US, we would also use a plural verb with an obviously plural team name. We use the singular with collective nouns in general (the team is), but we would say "the Tigers are."

We would say "Detroit is the best team."
