which sentence is the best (if there's any...)?

when the cars collided, they were engulfed in a ball of fire
when the cars collided, they were enveloped in a ball of fire
when the cars collided, they were involved in a ball of fire

"Engulfed" is the best choice here.
"Enveloped" would also be correct, but a native speaker is less likely to use this word.
"Involved" would be wrong.
