Hi dear experts, Itranslated this from my native language into English. Could you tell if it understandable or if it sounds OK in English:

"The term “head of the family” is widely spread in Bulgarian society. Usually, the husband or the father performs this role, but his status in the family has changed a lot in recent years. Bulgarian women have been in equal material and social positions with the men in the last two decades. This fact determines not only their financial independence, but also their self-awareness and authority within the family. This change in family roles is the natural result of the increased educational, cultural and public activities of young couples. It is quite common for the spouses to be equally educated, which leads to change in family positions – the characteristic of the past subordination of the spouses has been replaced by equality between them.
Today, wives are considered equal to their husbands. Bulgarian women successfully perform housework, family duties and career development."

Brilliant, perfectly understandable.
Though, the last sentence:
To avoid having the idea of "performing career development, which sounds odd you could say:"Bulgarian women successfully perform housework, take care of family duties and develop careers-wise"

"The term “head of the family” is widely spread in Bulgarian society.

A 'term' is not regarded as wide spread, but the use of the term.

Having a "head of the family" is a customary practice in Bulgarian society.

Usually, the husband or the father performs this role, but his status in the family has changed greatly in recent years.

Bulgarian women have enjoyed equality in both material and social positions with (the-omit) men for the past two decades.

This change has brought not only their financial independence, but an increased self-awareness and authority within the family.

What about a major rewrite here:
This new-found authority has been the result of increased educational opportunities, and the cultural and social activities of young couples. It is quite common for spouses to be equally educated, and the past subordination of the wife has been replaced by equality within the marriage and even a change in family roles.
Today, Bulgarian women successfully juggle housework, family duties and career development.
