(2)"Can you lift this case?" "It depends how heavy it is."


Why isn't there an "on" after "depends" in the second sentence, which exists in the first sentence?

It should be "It depends on how heavy it is".

In BrE, "on" is frequently omitted, at least when speaking.

When will you get home tonight?
It depends what time I finish.

Where will you leave your car?
It depends how bad the parking situation is.

Are you coming to the party Saturday night?
It depends if I've finished proofreading my article. It's due on Sunday.

Do you think it is appropriate for a college writing class? I know some professors are very picky.

Some native speakers are pretty picky too! I would recommend that individual students bring this up with their teachers to see if they would accept it without "on".
