John: Tim there is a call for you?
Tim: Who is it?
John: Jane is on the line.

What should we say "On line" or "On the line"?

John: Tim, there is a call for you. [STRIKE]?[/STRIKE] It's not a question.
Tim: Who is it?
John: Jane is on the line.

What should we say: "on line" or "on the line"?
Say 'on the line' — 'on line' means 'connected to the internet'.

EDIT: I've just remembered that if the company has more than one phone line, John could say 'Jane is on line two'.
