John is one among several others online who has/have expressed support for the government's proposal to ban smoking in shopping centres.

The above sentence is my own.

I would like to know whether I should use "has" or "have". I think "has" is correct because "John" is the subject.

Am I correct? Thanks.

This is one of those ambiguous cases where the best solution is to re-write the sentence. As written, either solution will look wrong to many readers.

And proponents of both variants can make plausible rationales for their preference.
