Perhaps, you are confusing propose with profess. You can say "John professed his love for Ann."

If we have to use "marriage" then what do we need to say? I heard it somewhere "he proposed her marriage". It is incorrect to say this, right?

You can say "he proposed marriage to her". "marriage" is not needed but is not wrong.
