Would you please correct the mistakes in my sentences? I am not sure if "regard" is the right word, I used in my last sentence.

John was almost killed in a car accident when the front wheel came off his car and he lost control of it and crushed into the tree. Later the police found out that someone loosened the nuts on that wheel. They regarded that as an attempt to murder.

He crashed into a tree unless you've previously mentioned the tree in question.

The police discovered that someone had loosened the lug-nuts. (Just "nuts" is OK too.) They regarded that as attempted murder (or "considered that attempted murder").

I'll repeat my sentence just an exercise and to remember it if I ever need to write something similar.

John was almost killed in a car accident when the front wheel came off his car and he lost control and crashed into a tree. The police discovered that someone had loosened the nuts. They considered that attempted murder.
