I am not sure if my sentences are grammatically correct or if they sound natural. Would you please correct my mistakes?

Just as hopes faded that a lost child would ever be found, a group of shepherds accidentally came across him. He was dehydrated and confused but otherwise in good health.

Use "the lost child". It's clear that it is a specific child who is lost. You don't really need "accidentally". That's implied in "came across him".
